Vickers Loses Engine On Final Lap, Holds On For 6th |
It was a solid weekend across the board for Brian Vickers in both of his rides. On
Friday night in the Dollar General 300, Vickers and the Braun Racing Team overcame
an early pit stop because of a left rear tire that had come loose and a speeding
penalty. "By the time I got back on (pit road) I missed it coming in and
I was totally speeding, said Vickers of the penalty. "There’s sometimes when
I can argue with NASCAR about speeding, but that wasn’t one of them. They called
that one right. I really hated it". Brian was one of the fastest cars on the
track all night, and it showed as they came from two laps down to record a top
five finish- Fourth. Saturday nights race was set by the points due to rain on Thursday night. Brian battled a lose race car for most of the duration of the event. The team gambled on pit strategy and it paid off as the field cycled through green flag stops and the Red Bull Team caught a break when the caution came out for debris to put them back on the same pit cycle as every one else. Short pitting and staying out have been calls that Kevin Hamlin and company have pretty much mastered over the past few weeks to keep Brian out front. The No 83 Camry was consistently one of the top cars on the track all night. Oddly enough, on the final lap, the engine let go and Brian crossed the line in sixth spot. "Unfortunately, the engine blew on the last lap. We were down a cylinder on the restart, so those guys got a jump on us. Then, the engine finally blew coming out of Turn four on the last lap, and we coasted across the finish line. We ended up sixth, so it could have been worse. It was a good points day for us." The finish moves Brian to 14th in the points. 95 out of 12th place, the cut-off in the race to the Chase. Seven races to go. (BrianVickers.com) |
